The sun-kissed wines of Sicily and Southern Italy
The sunny south of Italy is blessed with a hot Meditteranean climate which means that it's famous for full-bodied reds made from fully ripened grapes. However in common with the rest of Italy there's an exciting variety of styles to explore from light, crisp whites to restrained and elegant reds.
There's a huge buzz right now around white wine from Campania, home of Naples and the thin crust pizza. We start our evening tasting exploring what makes Campania so special and then taste a couple of tongue tingling white wines made from local grape varieties.
Basilicata is a mountainous region that has hung it's hat on Aglianico, a red grape that loves the rocky terrain around the imposing extinct volcano, Mount Venture. You won't find this wine anywhere else in the world; but we will taste our way through a fine example.
Puglia is famous for it's little conical white houses called Trulli and high quality red wines made from local red grapes such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. We will take a look at just how important the sun is in making great red wine and taste a couple of fine, fruity examples of the best that Puglia has to offer.
Finally, we will taste our way around the island of Sicily. The Sicilians have their own proud winemaking traditions but some of their winemaking is super modern which makes for some of Italy's most exciting wines. You'll get to try taste a wine from one of Siciliy's hot spots, vineyards on the slopes surrounding Mount Etna.
