Secret Italy including Volcanic Wines
Italy's winemaking secret is the thousands of local, indigenous grape varieties grown in some of the world's most unique wine 'terroirs' that produce unique wines that can't be found anywhere else in the world.
This tasting will explore some of the lesser known grape varieties nurtured with Italian flair and passion in vineyards from the top to the toe of Italy.
The northern region of Alto Adige borders Austria and is known locally as the 'Sudtirol'. As well local varieties such as Lagrein and Schiava they also grow Gewurztraminer, Muller-Thurgau and Sylvaner as well as Pinot Bianco. We'll explain why and you'll get to taste a couple of wines that demonstrate just how good the local wines can be.
Over in The Veneto, the vineyards around the city of Verona are home to a range of local red grape varieties which, when made in the 'Ripasso' style, are transformed into full bodied, complex, fruity red wines. We'll explain the Ripasso style and try a fine example matched with a taste of an Italian blue cheese.
Down in the South of Italy there's a bewidlering array of local grape varieties. In Campagnia, Greco, Fiano and Falanghina make outstanding fresh, crisp and dry white wines. Neighbouring Basilicata is home to the 'Barolo of the South', Aglianico, a red grape that produces complex, ageworthy wines and Puglia is home to local red grape varieties including Negroamaro and Primitivo that make 'New World' style red wines. We'll taste a couple of wines that showcase the diversity of the south.
Finally in sunny Sicily, Volcanic Wine is a hot topic. Here local grape varieties such as the red grape Nerello Mascalese and the white grape Carricate thrive in the vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna. We'll taste a couple of Sicily's best kept secrets.
