Jeremy's Italy - 4 Week Discovery Course
Wine school founder & Chief Wine Tutor, Jeremy Dunn, has a passion for Italian wine having spent much of his early wine career travelling the length and breadth of Italy. This 4 week course explores the wines and the wine culture of some of his favourite Italian regions with a range of wines specially selected to show you a side of Italy that you won't have seen before.
Course Programme: (4 x Tuesday evenings - 15th, 22nd, 29th September & 6th October)
Week 1: The Veneto. This large region is home to a variety of wine styles made with local indigenous grapes. Cool breezes lap the shores of Lake Garda where wines like Lugana and Bardolino have their own character and charm. The hills surrounding the city of Verona are the home of Soave and Valpolicella made with native grapes including Garganega, Trebbiano, Corvina & Rondinella. Jeremy will explain how the locals have mastered the art of drying grapes to add flavour and complexity to their wines and demonstrate the difference it makes with a comparative tasting.
Week 2: Piemonte & Franciacorta. Often compared to Burgundy, Piemonte is home of the mighty Nebbiolo grape, the grape behind Barolo, probably Italy's finest red wine. After paying his respect to Nebbiolo, Jeremy explores another side of Piemonte including white wines from Gavi and Roero Arneis as well as red wines made from Barbera and Dolcetto. A quick hop over the border into Lombardy takes you to Franciacorta, home of Sparkling Wines that are said to be Italy's answer to Champagne. Will you agree?
Week 3: Tuscany & Umbria.Tuscany is home to the Sangiovese grape. You've probably enjoyed a glass of Chianti or two but the true story of this region lies in the subtle differences in style of Sangiovese based wines from different sub-regions. You'll enjoy a comparative tasting of at least three different wines including a Chianti Classico, a Morellino di Scansano & either a Brunello di Montalcino or a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This will leave just enough time to explore the white wines of the region including an Orvieto from Umbria where the unique tufo-based soil creates a unique terroir that's perfect for growing white grapes.
Week 4; The Mezzogiorno, wines from Campania, Basilicata and Puglia. Often overlooked, the Southern mainland is home to some of Italy's most dynamic and exciting wine regions. A warm Meditterranean climate with a range of sites on which grapes can be grown, including areas with highly prized volcanic soils, the South is home to many different terroirs. It has more than its fair share of native grapes and makes crisp white wines from grapes including Greco & Fiano and bold, fruity red wines made from grapes such as Negroamaro & Aglianico. You'll taste a range of character-packed wines including a fine Aglianico del Vulture, known as the 'Barolo of the South'.
Professional ISO tasting glasses and all course materials inlcuding tasting sheets and notes via pdf are included.
